Outside the City Wall, Where the City ends and the Forest begins
By Trondheim By /Boat /Foot

Start at Ilaparken, close to Trondheim city centre, and travel by public transport into Bymarka, Trondheim’s green forest area. This guided hike follows quiet trails through lakes, woodland, and cultural landscape, showing how the edge of the city has long been used for work, farming, forestry, and outdoor recreation. Walk from Kobberdammen and Baklidammen towards Lavollen and Theisendammen, following stories of crofter’s farms, summer pastures, historic water systems, and local life in Bymarka.
The signature stop is Lavollen, a former crofter’s farm and summer pasture that is now a hiking café, where a sweet bakery treat is included before the route continues towards views by Theisendammen and a bus connection back to the city. This family-friendly hike suits guests looking for an easy to moderate outdoor activity with local history, fresh air, and a relaxed pace.
The route is about 7 km on natural forest trails with some uneven ground and ascent. A local guide leads the way and shares storytelling throughout. Bus transport is included. Wear good walking shoes and clothing suited to the weather. Guiding is in Norwegian, with English available.
