Holmshatten is a prominent and popular hiking destination in Bindal municipality, and is considered one of the classic mountain hikes in the area. With its location just above Holm, the hike offers a strong nature experience where the contrast between coast, fjord, and mountains is evident throughout the ascent. This is a hike that rewards the effort – both physically and visually.
The trail follows a well-marked path that starts in birch forest and gradually transitions into open heather and mountain terrain. The higher you go, the wider the view becomes, and the landscape unfolds in stages that make the hike both motivating and varied. Along the way, you pass typical nature zones for coastal mountains in Nordland, with low vegetation, marshy areas, and rocky mountain ground.
đź‘€ From higher points on the route, you get panoramic views into and out over Bindalsfjorden, with sights of well-known landmarks and island landscapes along the coast. On clear days, the view extends far, giving a clear sense of how closely mountains and sea coexist in this part of Nordland.
Holmshatten is often described as a hike for "everyone," but should still be respected. The total ascent of around 620 meters makes the hike feel challenging for many, even though the path is good and easy to follow. A steady, long ascent characterizes large parts of the hike, and a slow pace is recommended – especially for families and less experienced hikers.
Note: The weather can change rapidly in the mountains, and fog can come suddenly, especially near the top. Good hiking shoes, windproof clothing, and a little extra time in reserve are recommended.
Access: Follow county road Fv17 towards Holm. On the long flat area north of the church, just by the 60 km sign, there is a signposted turnoff. Follow the gravel road about 300 meters to the parking lot, where the hike to Holmshatten begins.
